Frat Boy At the Movies: Rango
on March 5, 2011 at 1:38 amI didn’t think much of the trailer for Rango, but it turns out that the movie is pretty good. At first I thought, “Oh, great, they’re just cranking these CGI cartoons out” but Rango isn’t half bad.
The best portion of the movie is the opening, which is very surreal. Rango is a pet chameleon, trapped in a aquarium, when he is suddenly thrust into the middle of the desert. Whether or not the western town of animals is real seems a little shaky at first.
There are some really great cameos both of Wild West movie figures and Johnny Depp movies in general. One of the great ones borrows from the movie “Chinatown”.
Depp’s performance is solid and the design and images striking. It’s a solid two hours of entertainment. However, it is pretty derivative and not nearly as emotionally captivating as a movie like, say “Up”. The cast is simply amazing: Ned Beatty, Bill Nighy, Ilsa Fisher, Stephen Root and others. Timothy Olyphant does a great imitation at the end, which I won’t give away.
It’s totally worth seeing, if not in the movies, then definitely video. It’s kinda aimed at kids, but doesn’t totally talk down to them. I give Rango 7.5 keggers out of 10.
