Frat Boy At the Movies: Brave
on July 1, 2012 at 12:01 amPixar cranks out another very enjoyable flick with Brave. The basic premise, a Scottish princess wants to change her fate, but ends up getting more than she bargained for when she hires a witch to cast a spell. The story plays more like a long, TV movie that epic. Maybe that’s because the stakes are so low. But this is one of the most beautifully animated movies Pixar has done to date. Just the movement of Merida’s hair alone is pretty amazing.
The movie has a few anachronisms for the sake of a few jokes. It tends to undermine the seriousness of the situation somewhat. Also, Merida’s skills as an archer, which are considerable, don’t seem to come into play much in the film at all.
Still, voice performances, especially by Bill Connolly, Emma Thompson and Kelly MacDonald are spot on. Even Cliff, from Cheers, John Ratzenberger has a role. I would say that the movie is probably not going to blow you away, like Toy Story 3, but it’s definitely entertaining throughout.
I give Brave 7.5 keggers out of 10.
