I’ll admit I was out of the loop on this whole Night at the Museum, franchise.  I knew the movie made lots of money, but for some reason, I never got around to seeing the first one.  If only I had known Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant from the State and Reno 911! had written it!  These guys are funny and they deserve this great success.  They also make quick cameos as the Wright Brothers.

From the same guys that brought you Balls of Fury (which isn’t bad), NATM2 is full of great performances from a lot of funny actors.  Bill Hader as General Custer, Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt, Christopher Guest as Ivan the Terrible and Hank Azaria as the evil pharoah was awesome.  In case you don’t know, he also voices Moe from the Simpsons.

The great part about the movie, directed by Shawn Levy, is that it never takes itself too seriously.  Yes, there’s a love story and a bit of a message, but it doesn’t get in the way of the fun.  From beginning to end, that’s what the movie is about, having fun.  No one’s caught up in explaining all the “powers”, they work and that’s enough.  I don’t say this often, but this is a good movie to take your kids.  The movie doesn’t talk down to you and it’s just a bunch of silly fun.

I give Night at the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian 9 out of 10 keggers.  It’s perfect summertime fluff.
