Frat Boy At the Movies: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

by tonyd on October 7, 2011 at 12:01 am

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a clever twist on slasher movies.  The twist holds up for about 95% of the movie and is really funny.  This movie is a must for anyone that used to watch slasher movies.

The basic plot is a slasher movie in reverse.  Two hillbillies, Tucker and Dale (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) are headed to the woods to fix up Tucker’s cabin in the woods.  Along the way, they encounter a group of college kids headed for a camping trip.  The kids immediately jump to the conclusion that any hillbilly is a creepy hillbilly and Dale’s nervous attempt to talk to a college girl only confirm that fact.  From there, it only gets worse as the college kids’ paranoia snowballs when they see Tucker and Dale save a college girl from the water after she hits her head.  They assume, they knocked her out and kidnapped her.  It just escalates from there and the bodies start piling up.

The last ten minutes or so are almost too much and strain the credibility of the end, but up until that, it’s a pretty damn funny movie.  The hillbillies try everything to be friendly, but it’s constantly misinterpreted by the kids.  It’s a bit gory, but slasher film fans will notice all the slasher movie conceits that carry most of the movie.  Tudyk is solid in an understated role and Labine is pretty funny as the well meaning hillbilly.

I loved it.  There are some big laughs here.  I give Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 9 out of 10 keggers.  Don’t miss this one.

Frat Boy At the Movies: 50/50

by tonyd on October 6, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star in this based-on-a-true-story movie about Rogen’s friend from the Ali G show who got cancer.  I saw an interview with Rogen on the Daily Show and the movie sounded like a real door into his life.  I was slightly disappointed that Rogen and his buddy, Will Reiser, changed the characters.  (I was really hoping for a Sasha Baren Cohen cameo.)  Despite that, the movie is pretty good.

Adam (Levitt) finds out he has a rare cancer and Kyle (Rogen) is his best friend who helps.  Adam’s life unravels a bit as he has to deal with his relationship problems, his mother and falling for his therapist.  Some of the audience walked out of the movie, which I thought was odd, it was paced well.  And although Rogen was playing a character, based on what he said in the Daily Show interview and what was on the screen, it felt like there were some genuine moments of him being a dick.

So overall, this is a good flick worth seeing.  I would’ve liked to have seen something really close to true life, but this felt pretty genuine.  I give it 8 out of 10 keggers.

Twitter in Focus: Anders “Ders” Holm

by tonyd on October 5, 2011 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die.  Today’s contestant is Ders from Workaholics.  And if you haven’t seen Workaholics, you suck.  Watch it.  Let’s see what Ders has to say.

@ders808

October 2nd:  “If you like cheese pizza and plain hotdogs don’t even bother talking to me.”

What?  Together.  Because that sounds like it would rock.

October 2nd:  “I’m a mouth-breather.”

And you play one on TV.

October 2nd:  “Milk, milk, lemonade, around the corner… YOU know.”

Puke up the milk and lemonade?

October 2nd;  “Tommy Lee Jones for President in 2012.”

Yeah, right.  And how is supposed to hunt fugitives, Ders?  Huh?

October 3rd:  “The moment where ur listening to some rap and then suddenly all you can focus on is the quick INHALES between the lyrics. #no?”

Watching the season opener as I’m writing this.  Awesome.  When that guy kept the puppets, that rocked.

October 3rd:  “Also Pitbulls with big titties are cool.”

Until they get old and start dragging.  Is it possible to get your pitbull a boob job?

19 hours:  “Here’s a pic of my parents’ baby names list from b4 I popped out. Ragnar? Lars? Which name should I have taken instead? http://yfrog.com/h8wemdpdj”

Aw, dude.  Gunnar would rocked.  Then you’d be Nar!

2 hours ago:  “Just so you know, celebrities don’t really get any perks that regular people don’t get. (This message was sent from Anders’ iPhone 4S)”

Way to shatter my illusions, Der.  You don’t pull back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz until Dorothy and the Scarecrow are ready!

53 minutes ago:  “Re: my celebrity/iphone4S tweet… Be smarter, sense sarcasm, understand jokes. #Workaholics”

Oh, great!  And now you shattered my illusions about celebrities using sarcasm.  Thanks!

39 minutes ago:  “What do we think people? “@loldirtybastard: My friend bears an uncanny resemblance to you http://yfrog.com/mew2dij http://yfrog.com/kgb6zlrj””

Gunnar!

Okay, let’s rate Anders’ tweets.  Would love to see some more behind the scenes stuff, but he’s funny.  I give him a 7 for Insanity, an 8 for Style and a 10 for Mustness.  That’s an overall score off 8.3.  Gotta follow Ders, bros.  And watch his show.  And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email us here.
