Hey Bros!
Did you know that yours truly, Tony D, also writes for the Simpsons comics? It’s true! Look for Bart Simpson #58 and a story about Rod & Todd at a comic book store near you! It also features the work of Carol Lay, Evan Dorkin, Sergio Aragones and others!
Cedar Rapids, starring Ed Helms and John C. Reilly, is just one of those amazing comedy movies where everything came together. It’s the sort of movie you watch and marvel at why most other movies can’t get their shit together.
Ed Helms plays Tim, a naive insurance salesman who hasn’t really grown up emotionally. He’s in love with Macey (Sigourney Weaver), who used to be his teacher when he was 12 and now bangs him on the side as the cougar she is. But Tim doesn’t have the maturity to understand it’s just about sex and we he unexpected has to go to Cedar Rapids to save the insurance company, his life quickly unravels as everything he’s come to believe is exposed as a lie.
Ed Helms does an amazing job as Tim, as you watch his naivety peel away, while at the same time he keeps most of his integrity. John C. Reilly is over the top as a sleazy insurance guy that just wants to have fun on the road. Anne Henche is great as Joan, who crushes on Tim because she sees the goodness inside of him.
The movie seamlessly movies from one sequence to the next, as Tim’s life unravels and those he comes into contact with are either touched by his sweetness and honesty or try to take advantage of him. The cast is amazing. Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Stephen Root (from News Radio), Kurtwood Smith (Red Forman from That 70’s Show), Alia Shawkat (Maebyfrom Arrested Development), Rob Corddry and Thomas Lennon hit their marks with precision. Only Thomas Lennon doesn’t get to do much, but there’s one shot just before he leaves the screen that had me on the floor.
The movie is amazing for what it doesn’t do. It’s doesn’t end sappy, it doesn’t engage in a lot of cliched moments and it leaves you wanting more. I’d be first in line to see a sequel to this.
Bros, don’t miss this one. I give it 10 out of 10 keggers.
Not a bad movie,
Funnier than expected.
A little too long.
